At Codestarter, we want to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn how to code. We believe that it starts with having their own computer.
This is Elizabeth.
I met her at the Brooklyn Public Library. Elizabeth wanted to learn how to make her own video games, so she attended an open house learn-to-code event. Elizabeth borrowed the library's laptop for the day. It takes a lot of practice to become great at writing code. Without a computer, I worried that Elizabeth might never even have a chance to become a video game designer.
My cofounder, Tom, and I knew we needed to help. We raised the money for 20 laptops for kid coders, and we haven't looked back since. At Codestarter, we believe that more kids will develop and sustain an interest in coding if they receive the right tools, education, and support along the way.
Through our laptop donation program, we aim to:
- Increase access to coding for low-income children.
- Increase diversity in the tech industry through early and sustained support of coders from diverse backgrounds.
- Broaden the field of problems that the tech industry tries to solve, because coders from heterogeneous backgrounds have myriad interests and will seek out a variety of solutions.
We know these are huge goals, but we're up for the challenge!
We're delighted that you're considering joining us. Together we can change the lives of kids who want to learn to code, but who simply need a computer to get started.
